A round table “Inclusion of people with disabilities: current situation and development prospects” was held in Minsk within the framework of the project “Art for inclusion of people with disabilities”. It was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Culture, mass media, heads of NGO and organizations, specialists and volunteers involved in the project.
A sociological research “Study of the level of tolerance of the youth in relation to people with disabilities” (2014 – 2015) has been carried out within the framework of the project “Art for inclusion of people with disabilities” for the first time in Belarus, under the direction of EA Kechina, doctor of sociological sciences, professor.
The study was carried out in two stages. Stereotypes of perception and behavior of young people in relation to people with disabilities; their willingness to communicate with peers with disabilities; willingness to joint getting education of children /teenagers with disabilities were evaluated at the first stage. 487 respondents – students of comprehensive schools, vocational and secondary vocational colleges and high educational institutions subsequently took part in the training classes on theme of disability in the format “equal to equal”, carried out by an inclusive team of trained volunteers-multi
The research results showed that participation in trainings had a positive impact on raising awareness of the target audience on various aspects of disability (for example, understanding of barrier-free environment), raised motivation for receiving information in this area.
On the one hand, there are positive preconditions for successful development of inclusion in general and inclusive education, namely, a sufficiently high level of tolerance of young people in relation to people with disabilities. On the other hand, it is observed a sufficiently low level of willingness to communicate with their peers with disabilities and low level of tolerance towards inclusive education. A necessary condition for implementation of inclusive education is preparation all participants to the joint communication and cooperation.
Recommendations on implementation of inclusive education were developed based on the results of the study and discussion of effectiveness of the educational program in the format “equal to equal” on inclusion of people with disabilities into life of society. Recommendations were given to the Ministry of Education for consideration and carrying a resolution.
